Modern data often consists of feature vectors with a large number of features. High-dimensional geometry and Linear Algebra (Singular Value Decomposition) are two of the crucial areas which form the mathematical foundations of Data Science. American technology journalist Nicholas Thompson discusses how we can build for digital health and what role AI will play in this healthcare revolution that has leapfrogged as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare has historically been too slow to change or adapt to new technologies. Change is hard for everyone, but especially in a space like healthcare where change meets the especially strong headwinds of regulation, reimbursement, and legacy systems. A recent McKinsey report discussed how healthcare professionals now see between 50 and 175 times the number of patients virtually than before the pandemic. These numbers are striking, yet unsurprising, given that almost all parties involved had no traditional care alternatives available. Nicholas Thompson is the Editor in Chief of Wired and formerly the editor of NewYorker.com. He is a contributor for CBS News and regularly appears on CBS This Morning and CBSN. How can data mining in hospitals help researchers find cures for the most harmful diseases? In TEDxYouth@Zurich 2016, Richard talks about his role in the Human Brain Project. He explains how neurologists and psychiatrists will use the results of data mining the masses of data in Europe’s hospital and research databases to develop new diagnostic schemas thus facilitating an era of precision medicine. Richard, a former brain doctor, studied medicine at the University of Cambridge, where he first became interested in neuroscience. His work includes the development of new techniques for MRI, as well as a study drawing a connection between the enlarged hippocampus and heightened navigational skills of London taxi drivers. He now works for the Human Brain Project, where he is in charge of its medical informatics platform.
